No fewer than 30 students and one teacher were hospitalised following a gas leak at Our Lady of Apostles Secondary School, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, shortly after the school’s Wednesday assembly. The incident caused panic as a gaseous substance spread across the premises, leaving several students struggling to breathe, with some collapsing before emergency responders rushed them to the General Hospital, Ijebu Ode.
Initial reports suggested a possible explosion or external pollution, but school authorities clarified that it was a strange chemical odour, likely linked to a laboratory incident during a practical session. The Vice Principal (Junior School), Adeola Borogun, said the situation led to vomiting and fainting, prompting the immediate evacuation of affected students.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Environment, Ola Oresanya, ruled out an explosion or industrial pollution, noting that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact source of the gas. Medical officials confirmed that all affected individuals are in stable condition and responding to treatment, while local authorities assured that no lives were lost.
