Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti has been posthumously honoured with a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, nearly 30 years after his death, becoming the first African to receive the prestigious recognition. The award will be presented at the Grammy Awards in celebration of his lasting impact on global music and culture.
His son, Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti, welcomed the honour, describing it as a powerful validation of his father’s influence and legacy. He said the recognition reflects how deeply Fela’s music has lived in the hearts of people across generations, while longtime associate Rikki Stein noted that the acknowledgement was long overdue.
Beyond music, Fela was a cultural force and outspoken political activist who co-created Afrobeat with drummer Tony Allen, blending African rhythms with jazz and funk. With over 50 albums released before his death in 1997, Fela used his art to challenge injustice and shape a global movement that continues to inspire artists worldwide.
